If a work-related injury or illness results in lost time from work or modified duty, the employee must notify the Workers' Compensation Coordinator and present supporting documentation from the treating medical provider. Injured employees are required to keep their employer informed of their work status after each medical visit.

Any leave of absence due to a workplace injury or illness runs concurrently with all other University leaves of absence. Employees who need to miss work must request a formal leave of absence (refer to the Employee Handbook).

  1. Authorized Out-of-Work Status
    • Provide written documentation from your healthcare provider stating your status and, if possible, your expected return-to-work date.
    • Promptly complete and submit all forms sent to you by your claims adjuster.
    • Cooperate and communicate with the adjuster assigned to your claim.
    • Keep appointments with your healthcare provider and strictly follow the treatment plan.
  1. Modified Duty - An attempt will be made to provide modified duty to employees whose work-related injury or illness prevents them from performing the full range of duties within their job description.
    • Provide written documentation from your healthcare provider outlining any restrictions or limitations.
    • Keep appointments and follow the treatment plan.
    • Communicate any concerns or difficulties performing modified duty to your supervisor and medical provider.
  1. Full Duty - Returning to full duty requires a collaborative approach involving the employee, employer, and medical professionals.
    • Once your healthcare provider determines you have reached maximum medical improvement and no further medical treatment or modified duty is required, you will be discharged from care.
    • Your healthcare provider will provide documentation stating you are cleared to return to work without restrictions.
