Group Therapy

Group therapy is a powerful tool for growth and change. For many emotional concerns, personal struggles, and relationship issues that college students face, group therapy can be an effective treatment modality. In group therapy, 4-10 individuals meet face to face to share their struggles and concerns with the facilitation of a therapists. The power in group therapy lies in the unique opportunity to receive multiple perspectives, support, encouragement, and feedback from other individuals in a safe and confidential environment.

Currently, Xavier’s Counseling Services offers four (4) therapy groups: Conflict Resolution, Anxiety Support, LGBTQ+ Support, and Grief Support. Each group have different formats and offer clients different experiences.  Clients will have the chance to interact with others and benefit from sharing experiences, they will receive support and feedback, and build confidence along with coping skills and skills to enhance wellness. Groups typically begin after the second week of each term.

Coping With Anxiety

These sessions will help students develop skills for coping with and overcoming symptoms of anxiety, such as excessive worry, feeling overwhelmed, insomnia, perfectionism, and excessive self-criticism. Each week will cover different strategies, such as mindfulness and acceptance, defusing from negative thoughts, directing compassion toward oneself and other practices that enhance emotional resilience.

Conflict Resolution

These sessions will be geared toward the process of resolving dispute or disagreement.  Reconciling opposing disagreements through comprising, negotiation or mediation. Conflict is an inevitable part of the human experience, and by learning to manage conflict in positive ways we can harness its power to create positive change in our lives.

LGBTQ+ Support Group

For students who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, and/or Genderqueer, as well as those who are currently questioning their gender and/or sexual identity. A safe and affirming space where students can connect and share openly about their feelings and experiences related to gender and sexual identity, coming out, relationships, family issues, etc.

Grief Support Group

For students who have lost a significant person in their life to share their stories, while giving and receiving support around the many issues faced during the grieving process. Participants will be able to discuss their loss in a safe and supportive setting with others who have been through similar experiences.

Unless otherwise noted, groups require an intake session and brief meeting with the group leader. Please contact Counseling Services at 504-520-7315 for more information.
