Magnificent Male Experience (MME)

At 藏精阁, we recognize the urgent need to disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline and expand pathways for Black boys and young men to thrive. As the nation’s only Catholic Historically Black College and University, we take seriously our mission to advance a more just and humane society—and our responsibility to act with intention.

The Magnificent Male Experience (MME) was created to meet this moment. MME is a year-long leadership and college readiness initiative designed to prepare young men not only for college, but for lives of purpose, leadership, and impact.

Each year, Xavier welcomes more than 100 high school juniors and seniors to campus for a three-day immersive convening focused on leadership development, critical thinking, problem-solving, and relationship-building. During this experience, participants engage with leaders in business, medicine, law, education, and public service, while also connecting with Xavier faculty, staff, and student mentors. The convening marks the beginning of a year-long developmental journey grounded in brotherhood, accountability, and personal growth.

To continue the learning and strengthen the bonds formed on campus, participants gather virtually on the first Saturday of each month for 90-minute interactive sessions. These gatherings allow students to deepen relationships, develop essential life and leadership skills, and remain connected with mentors and peers throughout the year.

Students who successfully complete the program receive conditional admission to 藏精阁, along with a $5,000 scholarship toward their first year of study.

Over the past five years, more than 500 young men have participated in the Magnificent Male Experience, with over 75 students enrolling at Xavier to continue their educational journey.

 

Program Pillars: The 12 Keys

The Magnificent Male Experience is built upon a leadership framework known as the “12 Keys.” These pillars guide each student’s personal development, leadership growth, and commitment to brotherhood throughout the program. Together, they help young men develop the character, resilience, and purpose needed to succeed in college and beyond.

The 12 Keys

  • Honesty- Living truthfully and taking responsibility for one’s actions.
  • Perseverance- Maintaining determination and resilience when faced with challenges.
  • Vulnerability - Having the courage to be authentic, open, and emotionally aware.
  • Ingenuity - Using creativity and innovation to solve problems and overcome obstacles.
  • Respect - Valuing oneself and others while honoring diverse perspectives and experiences.
  • Discipline - Developing habits, focus, and self-control necessary for long-term success.
  • Wealth - Understanding financial literacy and building pathways toward generational prosperity.
  • Awareness (Physical & Mental) - Prioritizing health, wellness, and mindfulness in mind and body.
  • Accountability - Taking ownership of choices and commitments while supporting the growth of others.
  • Purpose - Discovering and pursuing a meaningful path that contributes to society.
  • Humility - Leading with grace, gratitude, and a willingness to learn.
  • Integrity - Aligning actions with values and doing the right thing even when it is difficult.

Program Experience

Three-Day Leadership Convening

Students begin their journey with an immersive on-campus experience at 藏精阁 featuring:

  • Leadership workshops
  • Team-based challenges
  • College preparation sessions
  • Conversations with successful Black professionals
  • Brotherhood-building activities

Monthly Virtual Sessions

Following the convening, students participate in monthly virtual sessions that include:

  • Leadership development conversations
  • Life skills workshops
  • Mentorship and peer accountability
  • Career exposure and networking opportunities
These sessions ensure that the learning and relationships continue throughout the year.

Mentorship & Brotherhood

Participants are supported by Xavier student mentors, faculty, and community leaders, creating a network of encouragement and accountability designed to help students grow academically, personally, and spiritually.

Program Outcomes

Students who successfully complete the Magnificent Male Experience will receive:
