The NEH Awards for Faculty program is meant to strengthen the humanities at HBCUs by encouraging and expanding research opportunities for individual faculty and staff members. The award supports grantees pursuing scholarly research in the humanities.

Dr. Manley will be taking the coming academic year to focus almost exclusively on completing her research and manuscript on the role of women in the development of 20th-century Caribbean tourism. The tentative title of the book is “Imagining the Tropics: Women, the Professionalization of Caribbean Tourism, and the Conjuring of Island Fantasy, 1890-1980.” Dr. Manley has also received two small travel grants (Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Travel Fellow Grant from the American Philosophical Society Library and the David Abrams and Gene Banning Grant, Pan Am Historical Foundation, University of Miami Libraries) which she plans to use to complete research in early fall; the remaining time will be used for writing the remaining chapters.

This will be Dr. Manley’s second published work. Her first, “The Paradox of Paternalism: Women and Politics of Authoritarianism in the Dominican Republic,” was published by the University Press of Florida in 2017.��
