As Director of the Division of Global Engagement at 藏精阁, Dr. Jiang serves as the University’s Chief/Senior International Officer who leads all University-wide academic and administrative elements concerning international students, scholars, international programs and domestic exchanges. Among his initiatives, the Director provides vision, strategies and policies for University-wide international affairs, provides leadership and development strategy for Center for Intercultural and International Programs (CIIP) and Confucius Institute (CI) and relevant international programs, expands the University’s global education initiatives and curricular efforts, ensures federal immigration compliance, and leads community and professional outreach to enhance the University’s internalization profile and branding.
Prior to his current role as Director of Global Engagement, Dr. Jiang was Director of the Confucius Institute (May 2012 to December 2020), and Interim Director, Center for Intercultural and International Programs (November 2018 to December 2020).
As the CI's Director, Dr. Jiang led the Confucius Institute to win the 2016 worldwide Confucius Institute of the Year and the 2018 Person of the Year Awards. The Xavier Confucius Institute is now the top Chinese language learning center in the State of Louisiana. He was President of the U.S. Southeast Chinese Language Association in 2017.
As CIIP's Interim Director, Dr. Jiang made significant progress in internalization efforts on campus, including streamlining and formalizing procedures, study abroad, curricular expansion, faculty support, cross-cultural activities, and international students and scholars training. He also established the first ever Study Abroad Scholarship Endowment for Xavier.
Dr. Jiang received his B.A. in Archaeology from Beijing University and Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Pittsburgh. He was the Paul Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Gallery of Art and Smithsonian Institution 2004-2005. Subsequently, Dr. Jiang was Assistant Professor of Art History at the Honors College, Florida Atlantic University, and M.A. Museum Studies Program, Southern University at New Orleans, where he was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in May 2012 before assuming the Directorship of the Confucius Institute at Xavier University.
Dr. Jiang received the “Distinguished Leadership Award” from Xavier in 2017 and is a member of the 2020 AIEA Leadership Academy. Under his leadership, Xavier received the 2020 Diversity Abroad’s Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion in International Education Award.
